Celery experiment :):)

On Monday we put part of celery sticks into colored water. I know that celery has leaves and roots, but those are cut off at the store when you get there.

What we did was we studied the stem of a plant. Our class talked about transport materials inside of the stem. There are two tubes that are made of tissues called the Xylem and Phloem. The xylem tube carries H2O up and through the entire plant and through the leaves. After photosynthesis takes place the phloem tubes carry the sugar produced in photosynthesis down to the rest of the plant.

Since we talked about the stem of the plant we did the celery stick experiment. Our purpose for doing the experiment was to see the xylem and phloem tubes through the colored water. So we filled little test tubes with 15 mm. of water and colored water with food coloring and stuck the celery into the water.

And yesterday we looked at the creepy stickes to see what happened. The stem (celery sticks) had adsorbed the colored water but never reached the leaves. Since mrs sims cut off the leaves, photosynthesis  could not take place. Some groups plants looked like the water was about to burst through the top of the celery. And the bottom of the plant was completely colored in red or blue. Other groups plants had absorbed so much that you could see the water inside of the plant. Overall we had fun and to was a great learning experience. Now  here's many pictures of the results. #plantpics #celery #tashag
