Figurative Language

Our class has been talking about figurative language so we played a game on figurative language.

Figurative Language is pictures that make words or sounds.

For example:
METAPHORS-Compare two things by describing one in terms of another.
SIMILES-Compare two things by using like or as.
PERSONIFICATION-means making something "person like".
SENSORY WORDS-describe something we can taste or feel.

 This is the game.

Ice Cream

Today our class made homemade ice cream. The way that we made ice cream was we used Mrs. Sims ice cream maker. We mixed all of the ingredients together and rolled the ice cream maker sround on the floor four at a time. The reason that we made ice cream was to learn about supply and demand. While groups made ice cream, others were reading and were on the mini-laptops. On the computers we used ben ans jerry's ice cream website to learn about supply and demand. It was alot of fun, and the ice cream was super yummy!!

Bread Baking

Today our class made bread. We sorted out the different supplies by natural resources (resources that come form nature.)  , human resources (a good or service provided by a human) , and capital resources.(a man made product that costs money) we made bread because when our class goes to the school of economics, we will be in a simulation. Our grade level will pretend to be immigrants coming from Ellis Island. Later that day, we read a book on immigrants that came from foreign country's. While baking the bread every time a resource was used we added that resource to our posters. Our class had so much fun baking the bread and we hope that we can do it again.

Here is the recipe we used and the link to the blog:

Writing Fiction Summarys

Today in reading we learned what is most important to put in a summary. Together we did a summary on Each Kindess by: Jaqualn Woodson. We made sure to provide the information of characters, setting, conflict, main events, solutions, and the theme. Then we went back in and underlined each thing in a different color. We learned that all a summary really needs are those 6 things and not much else. We are going to try to cut out the extra fluff from our readers response letters summary and put on the inportant things.
