Adding and Subtracting Positive and Negative Numbers

Toady in math we are working on adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers. Mrs Sims took us outside in the hall and showed us how to do this......

First she gave us sticky notes with positive and negative numbers from +21 to -21. Then we stuck them on the wall in order, like in a number line. After that she wrote a problem on her slate and showed us how to solve it.

Let's say that you have -10+6. First you would start at the zero and face the side with the positive numbers. Then you would say the first word in the problem. Negative is the first word. So then you would flip around facing the negative side.  After that you would go to negative 10. Plus is the next word you hear. You would face towards the positive side and would add or move forward six. Or answer or result would be -4.

We had fun today learning about adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers today!!!!!!!

Luna Moth

Today Mrs.Sims brought a luna moth (it might be a Polyphemus moth) cocoon in to class. She found it in her garden. Luna moths are large moths that spend most of their lives as caterpillars, as they only live for about 20 hours and can't eat. They grow to be about 4.5 inches, making them one of the largest moths in North America. The caterpillars eat  a variety of trees, including walnut, hickory, sweet gum, etc. Find more info at Luna moth - Department of Entomology - Texas A&M University

Tornado

Today at school we had a tornado drill. When the intercom came on we lined up at the door. First we went to Mrs. Perterson's room and ducked just like we would during a real tornado drill. Then Dr. Reich moved us to the girls bathroom for our permanent spot for a tornado drill or a real tornado. Mrs.nSims told us that we were lucky we don't have to sit on the floor during drills because her school made her go in the stalls!
