Luna Moth

Today Mrs.Sims brought a luna moth (it might be a Polyphemus moth) cocoon in to class. She found it in her garden. Luna moths are large moths that spend most of their lives as caterpillars, as they only live for about 20 hours and can't eat. They grow to be about 4.5 inches, making them one of the largest moths in North America. The caterpillars eat  a variety of trees, including walnut, hickory, sweet gum, etc. Find more info at Luna moth - Department of Entomology - Texas A&M University
